Celebrating 38 Years of Excel Courier

In 1986, big hair, bright colors, and parachute pants were all the rage, and Excel Courier was just getting started! The company began in a one-room office with one dispatcher, three drivers, a typewriter, and a cot for sleeping between deliveries. Today, Excel Courier is a $20 million time-critical, same-day delivery company with 50 employees and over 250 drivers in three locations.

This incredible growth is a testament to many factors, but we want to highlight CEO Chris Marchetti's drive, determination, and ability to cultivate a supportive culture that aligns with the company's mission. The average employee tenure is over 8 years!

1986 was the year Chris Marchetti, then 23, faced a tough decision: to buy the courier company he was working for or start rifling through job ads.

His decision to buy had a profound impact, creating a positive ripple effect for multiple generations. Excel Courier has employees who strive for their best every day, drivers who can build their independent careers, and clients whose lives are impacted by the critical materials we deliver, such as cell and gene therapy research specimens.

It was no easy feat. There were many challenges that could have overwhelmed a young company, but the need to adapt and evolve prevailed. As technology advanced, traditional document deliveries became obsolete, prompting Excel to shift its focus to healthcare logistics. The events of September 11th led to the implementation of a robust driver TSA program, which we still adhere to today. The 2008 financial crisis was another significant hurdle. More recently, the impact of COVID-19 prompted us to reassess and significantly improve our courier technology and further enrich our experience in life science logistics.

Chris would be the first to say that his success hinges on the unwavering dedication and expertise of the entire Excel Courier team and drivers– from the diligent efforts of operations and warehouse personnel to the amazing administrative team and invaluable drivers.
